The Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) today announced Dr Philip Wright has been appointed as its new Director General commencing 1 March 2019.
Philip served as CEO of the Textile Services Association (TSA) until December 2018 and previously he was Chief Executive of Stem Cells for Safer Medicines Ltd and Director of Science and Technology at the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI). Philip has managed initiatives bringing together industry, academia and government at the CBI and Glaxo Wellcome.
Mark Bedlow, Chair of JCQ’s Board said:
“We are delighted that Philip is joining us as Director General. The Board is confident that his extensive career in managing membership organisations and his work with both employers and the education sector will greatly benefit JCQ in the future.”
Philip Wright said:
“I am delighted to be appointed to lead the JCQ. The UK exams system has an excellent reputation both within the UK and internationally, built upon the excellence of our examination boards. But there is a need to communicate this and the oversight and quality control that is in place more effectively to parents and key stakeholders. Working with schools and colleges, examiners, teachers and the UK regulators, there is much we can do to build on this excellence and ensure our examination and assessment systems for both general and vocational qualifications are fit for the future.”

Philip Wright has over 20 years’ experience working in public and regulatory affairs largely in the life sciences sectors, including leading educational outreach and activities in a number of different organisations. He has acted as both an Executive and Non-executive Director having served on four boards: this includes creating two companies (one an LLP) and a small charity. Until August 2009, Philip was Chief Executive of Stem Cells for Safer Medicines Ltd (SC4SM) and Director of Science and Technology at the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI). At the ABPI he had responsibility for policy and external affairs and education and schools links. Prior to this he was Director of Scientific and Educational Affairs at Glaxo Wellcome.
